How We Added a Patio Without Taking Over the Backyard
The homeowners wanted to use the area outside their sunroom as more than pass-through lawn. The backyard had plenty of open space, but there was no defined place for a table, chairs, outdoor dining, or guests. Their goal was not to cover the yard with hardscape. They wanted a comfortable patio that felt connected to the home while still leaving plenty of lawn around it.
That made the patio footprint just as important as the material. Because the new space would sit directly outside the sunroom, it needed to feel intentional when viewed from the house and practical when stepping outdoors. There was enough room in the backyard for a much larger patio, but a larger footprint was not necessary for the way the homeowners planned to use it. The layout was sized for outdoor furniture, dining, and gathering while keeping the rest of the backyard open.
Water movement also shaped the plan. Before construction, we looked at the existing grade and how rainwater moved through the backyard. Adding a new hard surface without considering that movement could change where water traveled after a storm. A permeable paver approach allowed the patio to provide the usable surface the homeowners wanted while giving water a path through the paved system and prepared aggregate base below.
Once the patio location, size, and drainage approach were established, the homeowners selected County Materials Majestic pavers for the finished surface. The clean appearance worked well with the straightforward footprint, and keeping the patio appropriately sized helped it feel like a natural extension of the sunroom rather than an oversized hardscape feature taking over the yard.

Much of what determines how a paver patio performs happens below the finished surface. On this project, the excavation, prepared aggregate base, patio elevation, and surrounding grade all had to work together. Considering those conditions before the pavers went down allowed the finished patio to provide a stable outdoor living surface without treating drainage as a separate problem after construction.
