Complete Fire-Feature Design

Built for Relaxing. Designed for Gathering.

A permanent fire feature changes how people sit, move and gather outdoors. It can affect patio dimensions, furniture placement, views, heat exposure, smoke movement, utilities, drainage, foundations and access to the rest of the yard.

Excel Landscaping begins with the property and the experience you want to create. We then help determine whether a fire pit, fireplace or another fire-feature configuration best supports the final outdoor-living plan.

PLAN THE SURROUNDING SPACE

Make Your Fire Feature Part of the Backyard

A fire pit or fireplace works best when the patio, seating, drainage and landscaping are planned around how you want to gather.

Retaining Walls

Shape sloped yards and create more usable space for seating, circulation and the fire feature.

Drainage Installation

Direct runoff away from the fire feature, patio and seating areas to help protect the finished space.

Paver Patios

Create a comfortable patio around the fire feature with room for seating, conversation and entertaining.

Landscaping Design

Use planting, lighting and surrounding landscape features to make the fire area feel connected to the rest of your backyard.

Outdoor Kitchens

Bring cooking and entertaining outdoors with a custom kitchen planned to work naturally with your patio, seating and landscape.

COMMON PLANNING QUESTIONS

Yes, in many cases. A typical built-in fire pit is about 36–48 inches wide, while an outdoor fireplace can require a substantially larger footprint and foundation. We inspect the existing patio first to confirm its construction, condition, available space, and whether it can properly support the new fire feature. If additional foundation or patio work is needed, we include that in the project plan before construction begins.

For a standard 36–48 inch fire pit, we generally plan for at least 3 feet of open space around the fire pit, with 5–7 feet providing a much more comfortable seating area. That means a typical fire-pit gathering area often needs roughly 12–16 feet of overall space. Fireplaces are planned differently because seating is positioned in front rather than around the feature. We confirm the final clearances based on the selected fire system, fuel type, manufacturer requirements, nearby structures, and local code.

Yes. A fireplace or fire pit can be part of a larger project that includes outdoor kitchens, paver patios, retaining walls, drainage, landscape lighting, and landscaping. Excel Landscaping can plan these elements together so the fire feature fits naturally into the finished backyard rather than feeling like a separate addition.

Most projects take about 6–12 weeks from planning through completion. The timeline depends on the fire feature, masonry, permits, utility coordination, material availability, and any patio or landscape work included. Once we understand the full scope, we can give you a much clearer timeline for your property.

Maintenance is generally straightforward. Gas fire features should have the burner, ignition, drainage, and connections checked periodically and kept clear of debris. Wood-burning features require regular ash removal and inspection of the firebox or liner. Masonry should also be checked periodically for weather-related wear, particularly after St. Louis freeze-thaw cycles. We’ll review the care requirements for the materials and fire system installed on your project.
